2011 Water Conservation Challenge

More than 9,200 students at 39 elementary schools throughout the St. Johns River Water Management District participated in the 2011 Water Conservation Challenge — a new District educational program. As part of the Challenge, students signed pledges to conserve water at home and at school, and encouraged others to do the same.

Their teachers also conducted water conservation lessons in their classrooms and students educated their communities about the need to conserve water resources. The activities included coloring water conservation messages on Publix Super Markets grocery bags, creating water conservation posters to hang in local businesses and libraries, and providing water conservation tips on the radio.

The first year of the Water Conservation Challenge was a big success due to the extra efforts of the participating schools and teachers, who included the water conservation lessons and activities into their schedules. In addition, the teachers developed numerous creative ideas for water conservation lessons to spread their enthusiasm and commitment for conservation to their students. Their work, and that of their students, shows encouraging signs for today’s youth and the next generation to conserve and protect Florida’s water resources.
